What can I expect in a counseling session?

At your first therapy session, you and your therapist will discuss your goals and needs for therapy. A session usually lasts about fifty minutes, and we typically meet with clients once per week, although other arrangements can be made if there is need for a more intensive level of treatment. Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about and process what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to do something specific outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records. For the therapy to "work," you must be an active participant, both during and between the therapy sessions

What benefits can I expect from working with a counselor?

Therapy can be difficult as well as rewarding. It is an effective way to address many emotional and relationship issues. In your first session, your therapist will ask you what you hope to accomplish in therapy, and the rest of our time will be spent trying to help you achieve that goal. Counseling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. Often, it's helpful just to know you have someone who understands what you're experiencing and has the perspective to see a way through. Therapy isn't like a medication that works "on" you. Your participation is a crucial part of the process, and the benefits you obtain from counseling depend on your effort as well as your therapist's skill and knowledge.
